The Department of Commerce and Finance, Quantum University organised a webinar titled “Common Derivatives” in collaboration with the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM). The session featured Mr. Vivek Sharma from NISM as the Resource Person and aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of derivatives, their structure and their practical applications in contemporary financial markets.
Mr. Sharma began the session with an introduction to derivative instruments and explained their significance in managing financial risks arising from fluctuations in prices, interest rates and exchange rates. He discussed the major types of derivatives, namely Forwards, Futures, Options and Swaps, highlighting their key features, contractual structures and practical applications.
The webinar further covered the functioning of derivative markets with reference to underlying assets, contract specifications, margin requirements and settlement mechanisms. Participants were also introduced to the distinction between exchange-traded derivatives and over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives, helping them develop a broader understanding of how different derivative markets operate.
A significant part of the session focused on the applications of derivatives in hedging, speculation and arbitrage. Practical examples from stock, commodity and currency markets helped students understand how derivatives can be used to manage financial risks and support informed financial decisions.
Mr. Sharma also highlighted the importance of risk management in derivative transactions and familiarised students with opportunities in the securities market. The discussion on professional certifications and career prospects encouraged students to explore career-oriented learning opportunities in finance.
The webinar proved to be an informative and enriching learning experience, enabling students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical financial market applications. The session enhanced their understanding of derivatives, market mechanisms, risk management, investment decisions and professional opportunities in the securities market.
