Civil and Petroleum Engineering Department organised a two-day workshop on water resource management intending to develop awareness among the students regarding water resource management. The organizing coordinator of the event was Mr Himanshu Kandpal. Mr Karan Babbar, Mr Shivanshu Malviya, Mr Pavan Kumar and Ms Shilpi Gupta were the guests.
To begin the workshop, Mr Karan Babbar, coordinator, CED gave a brief introduction on Water Resource Management. Further, he said, “Now is the high time to take some effective steps for the proper management of water resources. Due to economic growth, increasing water demand, and rapid population expansion, water resources are at great risk of depletion. Unless water resources are managed in a coordinated way, the pressure will further result in unsustainable development”.
While giving the causes for mismanagement of water resources, Mr Pavan Varshney said, “India has more than 16% of the world’s population, but only 4% of the world’s renewable water. Country’s growing population, industrialization, deforestation, urbanisation, unplanned growth and at times apathetic attitude have led to the mismanagement of water resources.”
Later on, Ms Shilpi Gupta, Assistant Professor, CED shared her thoughts and explained some of the methods which may help in water conservation. She talked about exploring new sources, enhancing storage capacity in multipurpose hydro projects, water technologies such as brackish water desalinization and reverse osmosis for seawater, recycling and reuse of water and mandating rainwater harvesting.
By using presentations and video lectures, Mr Shivanshu Malviya talked about various initiatives taken by the Government of India for water resource management. He said, “amidst the increasing pressure upon urban and rural ecosystems, an integrated and holistic approach needs to be pursued.” Through this workshop, students enhanced their knowledge base and learned the practices that need to be followed for the proper management of water resource.
