The Department of Law at Quantum University, Roorkee hosted an electrifying Intra-University Debate Competition on February 25, 2025, at Harmony Hall. This thought-provoking event brought together some of the brightest legal minds to deliberate on the compelling theme:  

“Traditional Law Codes vs. Modern Legal Framework: Should Ancient Indian Legal Texts Influence Contemporary Indian Law?”

Ancient Wisdom vs. Modern Justice

The debate sparked an intense intellectual battle as students analyzed the historical significance of ancient Indian legal texts like Manusmriti and Arthashastra, contrasting them with the evolving nature of contemporary Indian law. The arguments touched upon critical aspects such as morality, justice, adaptability, and the socio-legal impact of integrating traditional laws into modern judicial frameworks.  

  • Team Traditional: Advocated that ancient Indian legal principles hold timeless wisdom, offering ethical guidance, social structure, and foundational jurisprudence that modern laws can still learn from.  
  • Team Modern: Argued that today’s legal system must be progressive, inclusive, and adaptable, emphasizing the need for a constitutional, human rights-driven approach over outdated traditions.  

A Battle of Wit, Logic & Law!

The competition showcased powerful arguments, sharp rebuttals, and insightful critiques, making it a thrilling spectacle of legal brilliance. Participants were assessed by eminent faculty judges, who evaluated them based on content strength, clarity of expression, critical thinking, and persuasive ability.  

An Engaged & Enthusiastic Audience!

The debate wasn’t just about the competitors—the audience played an active role, posing challenging questions, sharing their perspectives, and fueling an engaging discourse on the intersection of tradition and modernity in law.  

Celebrating Legal Excellence!

After a series of intense deliberations and dynamic discussions, the winners were announced, followed by a felicitation ceremony to honor their outstanding performances.

This debate encouraged students to critically analyze historical legal perspectives, understand their relevance in today’s legal system, and develop a more holistic approach to law and governance. It was a testament to the importance of legal history, contemporary judicial advancements, and the need for continuous legal evolution.
