Spur gears are the most common type of gears. They have straight teeth, and are mounted on parallel shafts. They are simple in construction and easy to manufacture. They are used in high speed and high load applications.
Helical gears are used for transmitting power between two parallel shafts. They have teeth inclined to the axis, hence for the same width, their teeth are longer than spur gears and have higher load carrying capacity. Devices that use helical gears have bearings that can support this thrust load.
