B.Sc. (Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology - BMRIT)

Bachelor in Medical Radio & Imaging Technology or BMRIT is a modern course that trains students to tackle the challenges of cutting edge medical technology. Medical Imaging, also known as Radiology is the study and application of various imaging techniques to produce images of the internal structures of the human body. These pictures are termed radiographs and have emerged as integral to modern medical sciences. Their most common application is in the diagnosis of ailments ranging from simple bone fractures to dreaded tumours. More advanced uses arise in the studies of human anatomy and physiology. Medical Radio & Imaging Technology encompasses varied techniques in X-Ray study and Ultrasound to MRI and Nuclear Medicine.

A Medical Radiation Technologist, also known as a Radiologist, is thus a Physician with an added expertise in the production and interpretation of such images. Medical Radio & Imaging Technology has assumed great importance in medicine because it provides the least invasive, clean, quick and economic method to diagnose, monitor or treat bodily injury or disease.

The professionals in the field must possess good interpersonal and communication skills. This facilitates understanding with patients and association with technicians, doctors, computer experts and researchers. The ideal candidate for this course should be patient, calm, tolerant and sympathetic in dealing with human disease and disability with confidence, willpower and purpose. The individual must possess an objective, analytical and scientific mind with a pronounced attention to detail.

SCOPE AND HIGHLIGHTS

BMRIT introduces students to the basic bifurcation of the science of Radiology such as Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology. Diagnostic Radiology concerns itself with the use of X-Ray imaging and allied techniques for diagnoses of diseases and effects of the injury on the body. Interventional Radiology deals with the use of invasive procedures for diagnoses and treatment with the employment of imaging technology (X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI). Students can pursue PhD or MPhil degrees to specialize in a number of allied fields like Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Vascular and Interventional Radiology Pediatric Radiology, Nuclear Radiology, Pain Medicine and Neuroradiology.

A course in Medical Radio & Imaging Technology starts by initiating students in subjects like Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Surgery, Medicine and Diagnostic Techniques. This prepares students to grasp the nature of disease and pathology. The course then develops advanced topics like Radiation Physics, Radiobiology, Radio-Diagnosis, Radiotherapy, Clinical Trials, Palliative Care and Chemotherapy. The bachelor’s degree also deals with Therapeutic Radiography involving the radiation therapy of cancers and tumours.

The course lays special emphasis on hands-on work. As such the students learn to perform a number of medical procedures. These include Plain Film Radiology and Trauma Imaging, Ultrasound investigation, Therapeutic Assistance, Computed Tomography Examination, MRI functional studies, Urography, Vascular Investigation and Gastro-intestinal procedures. The students are trained exclusively in the core importance of Equipment Protocols, Radiation Safety and Radiation Protection.

CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES

The proliferation of medical facilities and the Government’s thrust on health care promises a bright future for Radiology professionals. After successfully completing the program students can find direct employment in clinics, nursing homes, public health centers, hospitals, diagnostic centers and the research sector. In such roles, the graduate scan starts by working as an apprentice to Senior Radiologists.

Medical Radio & Imaging Technology offers vast opportunities in the domain of research studies for researchers and scientists. Hence students can avail themselves a ready source of a successful career in research institutions and academics. BMRIT graduates can work in a number of job profiles such as Radiology Assistant, Radiographer, Radiology Technician, Radiologist, Ultrasound Technician, Sonographer, MRI Technician and CAT Technologist.
